Modernism, Amber and Craftsmanship – The Story of Kamena Boutique in Gdynia

A City Born from the Dream of Modernity

Gdynia has always felt to me like one of the most beautiful examples of modernist architecture in Poland – a city born from the dream of progress and harmony between space, light, and everyday life. In the 1930s, young architects here designed a new kind of urban environment: bright, geometric, and filled with optimism. Modernism in Gdynia was not just a style – it was a declaration of faith in the future, a symbol of courage and innovation that still inspires today.

The Modernist Corner at Świętojańska 89 /  Żołnierzy I Armii Wojska Polskiego 2 – A Testament to an Era

One of the most iconic buildings of that period is Franciszek Wegner’s tenement house at Świętojańska 89 / Żołnierzy I Armii Wojska Polskiego 2, designed by Stanisław Żwirski in the late 1930s. Its rounded corner and horizontal window lines resemble the silhouette of an ocean liner – a subtle nod to Gdynia’s maritime spirit. This building is part of the Gdynia Modernism Trail, a lasting symbol of the city that literally rose from the sea and from dreams.

From a Car Salon to a Jewellery Boutique

In the interwar years, this very corner was home to Jan Patalas’ car showroom – a place that drew elegant residents and reflected the glamour of the young port city. Over time, the space changed, but it never lost its connection to craftsmanship and beauty. For decades it housed a jewellery antiquarian shop where both antique and contemporary pieces were restored to new life.

Amber and Polish Gemstones in a Contemporary Light

Today, this address opens a new chapter. In the same corner, the Kamena jewellery boutique has found its home – a place where craftsmanship meets a poetic view of nature. We create our jewellery in Poland, using local stones and precious metals, giving them new form and meaning. Every collection tells a story – of the stone, the place, and the emotion that inspired it.

A special place in our collections belongs to Baltic amber – a stone deeply rooted in the history of Gdynia and the entire Baltic coast. While amber is often associated with tradition, we aim to reveal its modern face. At Kamena, we combine raw amber with minimalist geometry, delicate 14k gold or silver, and contemporary design. The result is modern amber jewellery – refined and timeless, connecting the story of the Baltic Sea with today’s aesthetics.

Beyond amber, we also craft pieces with nephrite, rodingite, chrysoprase, dolomite Picasso, mountain crystal from Poland, and meteorite – each with its own texture, colour, and story. I believe their natural beauty doesn’t need excess – only a form that lets the stone speak for itself.

Kamena Boutique in Gdynia – Modern Elegance in Historic Walls

Kamena Boutique at Świętojańska 89 / Żołnierzy I Armii Wojska Polskiego 2 in Gdynia is not just a store – it’s a tribute to the city’s heritage and artistic spirit. It’s a space where Gdynia’s modernism meets local craftsmanship and a contemporary interpretation of jewellery. For me, it’s a return to the essence of elegance – to beauty that endures beyond trends and time.

Opening our boutique in this historic corner of Gdynia is more than another step in our story. It’s a continuation of the city’s modernist legacy – a belief in thoughtful beauty, in the strength of craft, and in the value of what is created locally. A place that once symbolized progress now tells a new story about what truly lasts – about beauty that never fades.
